Teams: Demerara, Guyana, West Indies

Clyde Butts was a tall, lanky, right-arm off-spinner and useful late order batsman who played seven Test matches for the West Indies between 1985-1988 at a time when several quality fast bowlers were winning matches for the regional team with consummate ease.

He was fast-tracked into the Guyana senior team in 1982 after impressing local captain Alvin Kallicharran in the nets. It was the beginning of a long and illustrious career for Guyana. He played 61 first class games spanning 14 seasons. In 1994 he broke the Trinidadian Rangie Nanan’s record for the most wickets in Regional first class competition.

His consistency at the regional level afforded him a Test debut in 1985 against the touring New Zealanders at Bourda but although his countrymen were elated at his elevation there were some mixed emotions since he had taken the place of another Guyanese off-spinning all-rounder, Roger Harper.

On a featherbed of a pitch on which Richie Richardson creamed a splendid 185 and Martin Crowe a classy and courageous 188, Butts toiled manfully in New Zealand’s only innings for figures of nought for 113 off 47 overs.

He had to wait for almost two years before he played his second Test against Pakistan at Lahore in 1986/87. Even then he did not get a chance to bowl a single delivery since the speedsters Malcolm Marshall, Anthony Gray and Courtney Walsh wreaked havoc, demolishing Pakistan by an innings and ten runs. In the next Test at Karachi, he returned his best innings and match figures of four for 73 and six for 95 respectively.

His last three Test matches were played in the Indian sub-continent in 1987-88 but success there was limited. Against a team of exceptional quality players of spin he could only muster two wickets at 152.50 each.

However, he continued to play for Guyana with distinction until 1994. In all he played 87 first class games and took 348 wickets at 24.19 apiece.

Butts is currently the chairman of the West Indies senior selection panel.
