The highly anticipated Guyana Independence Twenty/20 Cup in Berbice received a major boost when Ansa Mcal Trading delivered a solid sponsorship package for the tournament, which is billed for the Albion Sports Complex on May 26.

At a simple presentation ceremony held on Tuesday at the company’s Berbice Branch, Manager Mark Bhikhai, presented the hefty sponsorship package to coordinator of the tournament, Anil Beharry.

Speaking briefly, Bhikhai expressed ANSA McAl Trading’s delight under the Carib beer brand to be associated with the tournament. He added that the event will help to promote the sport in the Ancient County.

Beharry thanked the sponsor for its contribution and pledged that the tournament will be managed with proper accountability and transparency.

The tournament, which is being held to coincide with Guyana’s 47th Independence anniversary, will feature four exciting teams: Universal DVD Berbice Titans, Karibee Rice Tigers, East Coast Demerara Raiders and Georgetown Jaguars. They will battle for over one million dollars in cash and prizes.

Players such as West Indies Test spinners, Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul, former West Indies opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon, West Indies middle-order batsman Assad Fudadin and national player Rajiv Ivan are all expected to feature for their respective team.

The proceeds from the event will go towards assisting with the development of sports in the region as two first division clubs are earmarked for allocations.

In addition, contributions will be made to two orphanages and two schools in Berbice and the rehabilitation of the pavilion at Albion Sports Complex, while the remainder will go towards the social obligations and community work plans for the two organisations under the Power to Change Programme.

The day’s activities will commence at 10:00 hours and the organisers are urging patrons to come out in their numbers to support the mega event.
