Chetty Praises Fudadin, Poonoo
PRESIDENT of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Chetram Singh, has lauded the performances of the two Guyanese - Assad Fudadin and Hemant Poonoo in the recently-concluded Costcutter Under-15 tournament in England.
The West Indies defeated Pakistan in last Thursday's final, played at Lord's to claim the coveted trophy, the first by a West Indies team in a world tournament since Clive Lloyd side's victory in the 1979 Prudential World Cup.
According to the GCB president, the performances of the two Guyanese were outstanding. Fudadin, he pointed out batted quite well, crowning the tour with a match-winning man-of-the-match feat at Lord's while Poonoo, who bowled his allotment of 10 overs in most of the matches, was one of the main strike bowlers throughout the competition.
"While we are proud of them as Guyanese, basically we are glad that West Indies have won a youth tournament for the first time after participating in several Under-15 and Under-19 competitions," Singh said.
"It also shows that we have the young players in the making who are quite capable of going on to represent the senior West Indies team and to bring us back to the top of world cricket. It is an inspiration and a standard that the rest will have to live up to. In another few years, as defending champions, we would have a lot to play for," the GCB boss pointed out.
Singh also said that the present crop of players also have a chance, once they stick to the game and based on the talent they have shown, to also represent West Indies at the Under-19 level in the 2002 World Cup.
The two Berbicians were afforded the luxury of the VIP Lounge at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Timehri shortly after returning to Guyana last Saturday night. The two and the rest of the regional squad were also given a rousing reception at the Sir Grantley Adams Airport in Barbados hours before.
