East Bank, Georgetown Females Win

East Bank thumped East Coast by a three wickets when the third round of the Demerara Inter-Association Female 50-overs competition continued yesterday at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.

With East Coast winning the toss, Captain Reneka Isaacs decided to take first strike. They were bowled out for 145 in 41 overs with a major contribution of 54 extras. Among the top scorers were Kavita Yadram (28), Reneka Isaacs (14) and Darlene Gale (14). Leading bowlers for East Bank were Hema Singh (3-28), Leana Harris (3-29) and Prudence Williams (2-29).

Needing 146 for victory, Guyana and West Indies player June Ogle-Thomas, who is also the East Bank captain, led from the front with an accomplished half-century, which was spiced up with four 4′s to set the foundation for victory. Extras contributed a healthy 59 as Hema Singh, Prudence Williams and Adina Parker scored 13, 12 and 10 respectively to formalize the win at 146-7.

The leading wicket-takers for East Coast in a losing cause were Kavita Yadram and Angela Waldron who captured 3 each at a cost of 44 and 49 runs respectively.

Meanwhile, over at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Ground, Georgetown hammered West Bank by 183 runs after West Bank won the toss and invited Georgetown to take first strike. Intermittent morning showers delayed the start of the match but failed to reduce the allotted overs. When play was possible Joann Van Sertima lashed an unbeaten 45 with support from Akaze Thompson (37) to help her team compile a total of 183-6, extras top scoring with 50.

In reply, Onika Wallerson delivered an incisive spell to send West Bank packing for a meager 39 all out in 19.2 overs. Extras again led all scorers with 22 as all the batters failed to negotiate the bowling of Wallerson who sent down 8 overs for the winners that included 2 maidens, 11 runs for 3 wickets. She received support from Akaze Thompson who bowled 8 overs with 2 maidens while conceding 13 runs for 3 wickets.

The final round of matches will be played today. The Demerara Cricket Club Ground will host the match between East Bank and West Demerara with Georgetown and East Coast meeting at Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary. Both matches will commence at 09:30hrs.
