Demerara were fighting back at the close of play on day one against Essequibo in the opening round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) organised Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T)\Hand-in-Hand Insurance four-day Senior Inter-County tournament yesterday.

Kevon Boodie executes an off drive.

Essequibo ended the day on 101-3 in 36 overs after they were inserted by their opponents at the Enmore Community Centre ground, East Coast of Demerara.

When play finally commenced at 14:35hrs due to overnight showers, openers Royan Federicks and Kevon Boodie gave the visitors a solid start by adding 56 for the first wicket. The pair rotated the strike sensibly and wasted little time in dispatching the bad balls.

Federicks pulled medium pacer Christopher Barnwell to the mid wicket boundary before punching Trevon Garraway through point while Boodie who played some handsome shots on both sides of the wicket took the score to 49 at tea.

Amir Khan provided his team with the breakthrough after the interval when Federicks lofted him to mid on where Paul Wintz held a dolly; he departed for 29 which included five fours.

Boodie who was put down by Barnwell followed shortly when he attempted to hoist Zaheer Mohamed and was bowled off the inside edge for 32 with four fours at 68-2. Ricardo Peters and Dillon Heyliger added 25 for the third wicket before Peters skied Khan to mid off for 13.

Heyliger and Kemo Paul then saw their team to the close without further trouble; the former is unbeaten on 16 and Paul who hit the final ball of the day’s play to the point boundary on 07. Khan has so far taken 2-24 from 14 overs while Mohamed has 1-16 off 8.

Play is expected to start at 09:00hrs today.
