Floodlights, Angels, Warriors Win

Despite heavy rainfall all day, the General Marine sponsored nationwide softball cricket competitions ended in fine style on Sunday at the world famous Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda. Floodlights won the Male Over-40 final by beating Savage XI by 24 runs, Better Hope Warriors prevailed over Rockaway by 15 runs in the final of the Male Open, while Trophy Stall Angels defeated Wellwoman by 14 runs in the female championship game.

The countrywide competitions, which were organised by the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association, started on September 12 this year and were completed in just less than three months. During the grand finale on Sunday, live commentary on the games was provided by cricket commentator Inderjeet Persaud, with assistance from Ravendra Madholall and John Ramsingh. The female final, which commenced at 19:00hrs, was played through heavy rainfall and was recorded by NCN Channel 11 to be shown at a later date.

Below are the results from the games that were played.

Male Over-40 final: Floodlights defeated Savage XI by 24 runs. Floodlights 107-7 from 15 overs ( Toolsie Sahadeo 33, Richard Persaud 20, Nadir Baksh 2-10); Savage XI 83-3 from 15 overs ( Wallack Joseph 25, Falin Mohammed 23, Nadir Baksh 22*). Man-of-the-match: Toolsie Sahadeo.

Male Open final: Better Hope Warriors defeated Rockaway by 15 runs. Better Hope Warriors 112-4 from 15 overs ( Navin Singh 54*, Chien Gittens 16, Sackichan Jagdeo 2-22); Rockaway 97-7 from 15 overs (Krishna Deosaran 36, Rushie Samaroo 28, Richard Latif 3-14, Balram Roopnarine 2-24). Man-of-the-match: Navin Singh.

Female Open final: Trophy Stall Angels defeated Wellwoman by 14 runs. Trophy Stall Angels 45-5 from 10 overs (June Ogle-Thomas 11, Zaheeda Samdally, Nikola Leacock, and Haseena Mohamed took one wicket each); Wellwoman 31 all out from nine overs ( Haseena Mohamed 11, Nalini Sumintra 2-3) Player-of-the-match: Haseena Mohamed.

In the female semi-finals, Trophy Stall Angels had defeated 4R Lioness by 4 runs, while Wellwoman defeated Corriverton Queens by 6 wickets.

Meanwhile, at the presentation which followed at the conclusion of the day’s activities, Hakeen Majeed collected the MVP prize of a plaque and $ 5,000 for his three consecutive centuries in the Male Over-40 category. In the female competition, Gangadai Singh of 4R Lioness collected the MVP prize of a plaque and $ 5,000 for her all-round performances, which included a helmet-trick (four wickets in four consecutive deliveries). Navin Singh of Better Hope Warriors was named player-of-the-tournament for the Male Open category.

All the winning teams received trophies and $ 50,000 each, while the losing finalists received trophies and $ 25,000 each. The players of the match in the finals received a trophy and $ 5,000 each.

The competitions brought the curtains down on activities staged by the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) for the year. The executives would like to thank all the teams for participating in the competitions and wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The GFSCA officials would also like to congratulate Mr. Ramesh Sunich, who now has the reigning male and female 10/10 champions being sponsored by his business, the Trophy Stall of Bourda Market and the City Mall.

Softball action will resume on January 23 with the Stag Beer and El Dorado Rum softball competitions. Also, the GFSCA will send two teams to the United States to participate in the 2011 Florida Cup from March 4-6.
