The competition, which will commence on January 23 at various venues across the country, is being sponsored by Ansa McAl Trading under its Stag Beer brand, and Demerara Distillers Limited under its El Dorado Rum.

Speaking at the launching, Vice- president of GCC, Ramsay Ali, said that the idea of this tournament is basically to promote softball cricket on Friday nights under lights.

Ali further disclosed that softball cricket is traditionally used as a medium of interaction at all levels, and as such, the GCC along with the GFSCA thought it wise to package such a tournament that will be a fitting tribute to the game loved by all Guyanese.

He further stressed that the tournament will pause to facilitate the upcoming GT&T 10/10 competition, since the organisers feel that there should be no conflict with regards the development of the sport.

We the organisers respect the upcoming GT&T tournament and as such we have taken the decision to pause this tournament for four weeks.” Vice-president of the GFSCA, Ricky Deonarine, disclosed that the tournament will utilize a round robin format and will be played in three categories- Male Open 15/15, Female Open 10/10, and Male Over-40 25/25 overs.

Deonarine also mentioned that the winning team in each category will receive $50,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up teams are expected to cart off $25,000 each. Entrance fee for the male teams is $5,000, while the female teams are asked to pay an entrance fee of $2,000. Teams interested in participating are asked to contact organiser Wayne Jones on telephone numbers 650-1790 or 225-0994.

Also at the launching was Stag Beer Brand Manager, John Maikoo, who disclosed his company’s delight to be part of this tournament. Maikoo said that this particular sport has been the first venture by ANSA Mc AL Limited under its Stag Beer brand.

At the conclusion of the tournament on May 29 at the GCC ground, Bourda, players will be selected to represent their respective county at the Mike’s Pharmacy Inter-county softball tournament, which will be held in June. All three categories will be contested at the Inter-county level.

The four teams that qualify for the semi-finals in the Male Open category and the two finalists of the Male Over-40 category will be part of the Guyana Cup 2011 tournament to be staged on October 28-30. Teams from South Florida, Orlando, New York, Connecticut, Georgia, Ocala, Maryland, and Toronto are expected to be part of that tournament. Additionally, the eight female teams that qualify for the quarter-finals will play in a separate tournament alongside the Guyana Cup.

Meanwhile, all team captains or representatives are asked to be at the GCC ground, Bourda, on February 18 at 17:30h for further discussions on the tournament.
