GT&T 10/10 Reach Quarter-Finals
Teams intensify preparations ahead of quarter-finals
WITH over $10M in cash and prizes up for grabs, the teams that have made it to this year’s quarterfinals of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) second annual nationwide 10/10 softball cricket competition, have intensified preparations in an effort to progress further into the final four of the tournament.
The quarterfinals will be contested at the Everest Cricket Club ground tomorrow, with the semi-finals and final scheduled to bowl off at the Guyana National Stadium the following day from 09:30 h.
Defending champions in the men’s category, Trophy Stall face a tough opponent when they go up against Universal Solutions Tigers in their quarterfinal match-up tomorrow.
Trophy Stall will be brimming with confidence after their lopsided win against a clearly outclassed Platinum Jaguars of Lethem who lost by a whopping 95 runs in their Super 16 clash, while the Tigers must also feel positive after a comfortable six-wicket triumph against Farm XI.
Randy Ketwaroo, who starred in Trophy Stall’s victory, will once again be keen to duplicate his man-of-the-match performance, while Alvin Gobin’s power-hitting is a source to be reckoned with.
In the other fixtures in the Men’s category, the dangerous Wolf Warriors go up against Adventure Sports Club and this encounter promises to be a scorching affair, with Adventure SC booking their spot in the last eight, following an easy six-wicket win against Coomacka Mines.
On the other hand, the Warriors, who achieved the highest total in the Super 16 segment, are in sparkling form.
In their clash with Leguan Super Stars, they posted an imposing 160-2 and despite the opposition’s spirited reply, the result was never in doubt.
Mohamed Carew and Amit Jairam failed to convert good scores into half-centuries, but no one could deny that they both looked in excellent touch and getting them early will be the key for Adventure SC if they stand a chance of restricting the batting juggernauts that the Warriors possess.
Celebrity Times and Sandust XI match-up is another game that could produce a fascinating duel, while the mother of all battles is the highly-touted Regal XI against Affiance Storm.
Regal XI looked lacklustre in their last performance and will have to hit their strides very early if they hope to progress against a fiercely competitive Affiance Strom unit that looked impressive in their last game.
In the Women’s Division, Berbice All Stars comprising West Indies player Shemaine Campbelle romped to a comfortable win against a game, but outclassed Mahaica Queens, but could find Wakapoa a different proposition to contend with.
Mike’s Wellwoman and Rising Star II clash should see the former start as favourites after an impressive showing in their previous engagement, but perhaps the most intriguing clash of the day is the one between Lusignan Street Warriors and MTWTFFS Warriors.
Lusignan cruised to an easy nine-wicket triumph in their last encounter against Corriverton Queens, while MTWTFFS Warriors provided ample evidence of their talent with a six-wicket victory over the highly favoured 4R Lioness and could be the surprise team that will make it all the way to the finals.
The Trophy Stall Angels and Falcon Girls match promises to be another interesting battle and it is hard to choose a winner after both teams played impressively in their respective Super 16 engagements.
The action commences at 09:00 h tomorrow and the GT&T models along with comedian Chow-Pow will be in attendance all day, that could take on a carnival atmosphere, especially with music to suit the occasion. Lots of giveaways and C-point will be up for grabs.
