IMC Names CT20 Team
Despite being overlooked by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), the government of Guyana is urging the regional governing body to consider approving the government’s Interim Management Committee’s 14-member squad for next month Caribbean Twenty20 tournament.
The IMC, through the last legally constituted senior selection panel of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), selected a 14-member squad to represent Guyana in the upcoming competition. The selectors are Claude Raphael, Hubern Evans and Rabindranauth Seeram. The squad, which will be led by discarded West Indies middle-order batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, has been sent to the WICB for approval.
Earlier this week, the WICB received and approved the Guyana squad as provided by the GCB after Guyana had missed the November 22 deadline for the submission of teams. The squad has since been encamped at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence and is currently in its first phase of preparation under the guidance of coach Esaun Crandon.
Although the WICB continues to recognize the GCB as the only authorized body for cricket in Guyana, the government is contending that the GCB is not properly constituted since most of the members have resigned.
The executives who tendered their resignation to Sport Minister Dr. Frank Anthony on March 9 (2012) were Fizul Bacchus, Alfred Mentore, Anand Sanasie, Dru Bahadur, Anand Kalladeen, Colin Europe, Rayon Griffith, Nazimul Drepaul and Terry Holder. In addition, the government secured an injunction in the High Court back in February that prevents the executives of the GCB from performing duties on behalf of the board.
According to the government, the GCB cannot act as the WICB agent until the Court matters are resolved and the GCB is properly constituted. The government is therefore again encouraging the WICB to appoint an agent to act on their behalf during this period.
Only last week, the WICB rejected the government’s suggestion to appoint an agent to act on its behalf here as a means of ending the stalemate between the two sides. Guyana’s proposal had been made at a hush-hush meeting in Trinidad on November 24, 2012 between Sport Minister Dr Frank Anthony and a WICB team led by its President Julian Hunte.
The regional governing body also rejected in very strong language the draft Guyana Cricket Administration Bill, as well as the amendments to the constitution of the Guyana Cricket Board, as proposed by the government.
The IMC’s 14-man squad reads: Ramnaresh Sarwan (Captain), Veerasammy Permaul (Vice Captain), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon, Assad Fudadin, Jonathan Foo, Christopher Barnwell, Devindra Bishoo, Derwin Christian, Ransford Beaton, Gajanand Singh, Richard Ramdeen and Delon Heyliger.
The squad will be coach by Esaun Crandon, while Carl Moore will perform the duties as team manager.
