Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, in an exclusive interview with Guyana Times Sport yesterday, expressed his concerns about Guyana’s batting line up, as they prepare for the West Indies Cricket Board’s regional 4-day cricket competition, which is scheduled to commence February 4.

Kumar stated that the team will face tremendous pressure with the absence of left-handed opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon and all-rounder Narsingh Deonarine, who are both out with injuries, having already been deprived of the services of the veterans Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, who are on World Cup duties.

Deonarine pulled out with a tennis elbow injury, while opener Chattergoon was yesterday diagnosed with a stress fracture of his right shin. Chattergoon will miss the first round match against hosts Jamaica on February 4. The Sports Director said that the team will now look to skipper Assad Fudadin and right-hander Rajendra Chandrika to spearhead Guyana throughout the first round.

Barbados dismissed Guyana for 100 in Jamaica, as they failed to reach the 50-overs semi-finals last year, before being bowled out for 65 by Jamaica in their opening match in the regional T20 cricket tournament in Antigua this year.

The squad reads: Assad Fudadin (captain), Devendra Bishoo (vice-captain), Rajendra Chandrika, Steven Jacobs, Shemroy Barrington, Vishal Singh, Leon Johnson, Royston Crandon, Derwin Christian, Veerasammy Permaul, Esuan Crandon, Brendon Bess and Ronsford Beaton. The stand-bys are: Anthony Bramble, Zaheer Mohamed, Chris Barnwell, Andre Stoll and Keon Joseph.

Guyana is scheduled to play on the following days:

  • Round 1: February 4 – 7 Jamaica v Guyana in Jamaica
  • Round 2: February 11 – 14 Guyana v Leeward Islands at Guyana National Stadium in Guyana
  • Round 3: February 18 – 21 Windward Islands v Guyana at Arnos Vale in St Vincent
  • Round 4: February 25 – 28 Barbados v Guyana at Guyana National Stadium in Guyana

BREAK: March 1 – 10
