A fine all round performance from talented all-rounder David Latchaya guided defending champions Lower Corentyne to a comfortable 96 run win over New Amsterdam/Canje in the final of the National Communications Network sponsored Under-15 Inter Zone tournament organised by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB).

Regional Chairman Region 6, Mr. Zulfikar Mustapha (right) hands over winning trophy to captain S. Ramcharan.

Playing at the Cumberland Ground in Canje and batting first after winning the toss, Lower Corentyne was indebted to their Captain Sharaz Ramcharran 58 (4×4), Latchaya 37 (5×4), Arif Chan 19 and Daniel Lewis 15 not out as they reached 151 for 7 off their allotted 50 overs.

Chan and Ramcharran added a crucial 50 for the 4th wicket after the visitors had lost Nicholas Cameron, R. Harripersaud and Brandon Prashad at 26 for 3 in the 9th over. Ramcharran and Latchaya then added another 52 for the 5th wicket. Bowling for New Amsterdam/Canje Rodwell Henry claimed 3 for 43 and Leon Andrews 2 for 43.

In reply, New Amsterdam/Canje was never allowed to dominate and soon found themselves in trouble when Leon Andrews was run out without scoring then the talented Shimron Hetmyer was bowled by Yogindra Ramcharran for 09 to leave the home team at 9 for 2 in the 2nd over.

Vice captain Hakeem Hinds played a fighting hand with 28 not out (1×4, 2×6) and along with Shemroy Mc Kenzie were the only batsmen to reach double figures. Latchaya returned with the ball to claim 3 for 15; L. Bishram had 2 for 7.

BCB Public Relations Officer Hilbert Foster disclosed that this year’s tournament was a resounding success and expressed gratitude to Mr. Mohamed Sattaur, Mr. Faizal Jaffarally and NCN for their support of Berbice cricket. Foster also disclosed that Central Corentyne played as a separate team in 2011, making the number of teams five as the BCB expanded on the pool of players available for selection.

The Berbice Under-15 Inter County team was selected based on performance in this tournament as well as the Tenelec Inc. Under-15 Inter Club tournament.

Co-ordinator of NCN Berbice Operation Mr. Faizal Jaffarally praised the organising skills of the BCB while expressing satisfaction at the high standard of cricket played. He assured Board officials of his Company’s continued support since they were satisfied with the development of cricket in the Ancient County on and off the field of play.

Regional Chairman, Region No. 6, Mr. Zulfikar Mustapha urged the young players to be disciplined at all times as it was the foundation for success. He also challenged them to stay in school and to make education a key goal in life.

David Latchaya was named player-of-the-finals and received a trophy. As part of its Pro-Education Campaign, the BCB did not offer any financial rewards to the players but every member of the two teams received a scientific calculator.
