Nationwide Neal and Massy 40-over cricket…

Fascinating battles are likely to materialise today, when the 2009 edition of the Guyana Cricket Board, Neal and Massy 40-overs first division cricket competition enters its penultimate stage, with the nationwide semi-final matches.

At Albion in Berbice, the hosts will tackle Malteenoes Sports Club, while at Anna Regina Community Centre ground, Essequibo Coast, North Essequibo and Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar ( RHTWSB) will do battle.

Several top former and current national players will converge at both grounds and that should generate expectations of intriguing and exciting battles when the action gets cracking from 10: 00hrs.

The Albion and Malteenoes game should be a contest that promises excitement from ball one, given the fact that a number of players with first-class and international experience will be on show. At Anna Regina, the North Essequibo and RHTWSB match can be considered a game of profound interest.

Reflecting on what had transpired in the preliminary round, both batsmen and bowlers created strong impressions and no doubt, they will want to maintain the same momentum.

National middle-order batsman Assad Fudadin will be leading the RHTWSB unit and he will have a bulk of talented players at his disposal. He can expect great support from West Indies one- day batsman Royston Crandon and his elder brother Esaun in the bowling department.

North Essequibo, may be deemed as the underdogs, but their cricket in this version has been admirable since the commencement of the competition. The nation knows that Essequibo’s cricket is languishing at the bottom, but they would want to prove something special today.

Former senior Essequibo inter-county all-rounder Elroy Stephney is at the helm of the side, which has a bunch of youngsters, eager to showcase their talent.

Albion can enjoy home advantage and with two West Indies players in their lineup, and might have enough resources to overcome a touted Malteenoes unit.

Former national Under-19 off-spinner Orvin Mangru will lead the Albion combination, while West Indies representatives Narsingh Deonarine and Sewnarine Chattergoon will also be in the side.

Malteenoes will have national middle-order batsman Steven Jacobs as their leader, while he will have former national all- rounder Lennox Cush, national opening batsman Shemroy Barrington and a host of young, talented players in the team.

The final of the competition is set for the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, on October 18 in a day/ night encounter, beginning at 14:00hrs.
