National T20 Players To Unity
The T20 game in honour of world number one ranked Test batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, has been a major boost with all the players on the national T20 training squad making themselves available for the game at the Unity/Lancaster Sports Club this evening.
One of the organisers, speaking to this publication late yesterday afternoon, said confirmation was received that the players have accepted the offer to play in the match, which is slated to bowl off at 19:00 hours.
It therefore means that fans are in an early Christmas treat, as they will have a unique opportunity to witness all the national players in action before they head off to play in the Caribbean T20 championship in Trinidad and Tobago and St Lucia next year.
While Veerasammy Permaul will be unavoidably absent due to his commitment with the senior West Indies in Bangladesh, a host of star players will invade the Unity/Lancaster ground, including Chanderpaul, Trevon Griffith, Leon Johnson, Narsingh Deonarine, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Christopher Barnwell, Royston Crandon, Steven Jacobs, Derwin Christian, Jonathan Foo, Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton, Rajiv Ivan, Dillon Heleyger, Assad Fudadin, Paul Wintz, Keon Joseph, Anthony Bramble, Andre Stoll and Shimron Hetmyer.
Chanderpaul’s son Tagenarine, and former national players, batsmen Hemraj Garbarran and Krishna Arjune, spinner Lalchand Persaud and wicket-keeper Shiek Mohamed are also expected to participate in the game.
Prior to the start of the game, the Unity/Lancaster Sports Club will unveil a massive billboard, featuring Chanderpaul’s achievements as an international cricketer. The billboard, which will be located in the ground, was donated by Andrew Arts. Chanderpaul is the West Indies second highest runscorer in Test cricket and the first Guyanese batsman to pass 10,000 Test runs. He also has 27 Test centuries, second only to Brian Lara’s 34.
Chanderpaul has also accumulated 8,778 runs from 268 ODIs with 11 hundreds and 59 half-centuries.
The club will also unveil another billboard in honour of former president of the Guyana Cricket Board, Chetram Singh, who is a native of Unity.
The activity has attracted corporate support from GuyTrac, Andrew Arts, Regal Stationery, Buddy’s Pool Hall and Gym, AFS Shipping, Elegant Jewellery and Pawn Shop, Giftland OfficeMax, Ink Plus and Global Investment. Admission to the venue is free.
