Ogle-Thomas Hits Century
WEST Indies wicketkeeper/batter and captain of the female Demerara Inter-county team, June Ogle-Thomas, struck an unbeaten century as her team embarrassed Essequibo on their way to a massive 283-run victory at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground yesterday.
Winning the toss and opting to take first strike in hazy conditions, Demerara scored an imposing 293 for 3 from their 50 overs, with Ogle-Thomas leading the way with an unbeaten 131 that included five fours while Onika Wallerson, who added 105 for the first wicket with Ogle-Thomas, chipped in with 30 (3x4).
Vice-captain Abena Parker also shared a 92-run second-wicket partnership with Ogle-Thomas, contributing 24 to her team’s total before she was bowled by Sheneigh Calvan (1-52), with extras contributing a healthy 75 including 63 wides to the Demerara total.
When Essequibo replied, they were routed for a miserable and embarrassing 10 runs made in 13.4 overs, as Prudence Williams and Wallerson took three wickets each for 0 and 5 runs respectively. There were two wickets each for Akaze Thompson and Joan Van Sertima for 2 and 3 runs respectively.
The tournament continues today at the Demerara Cricket Club ground, with defending champions Cellink Berbice whose lineup includes West Indies players Shemaine Campbelle, Tremayne Smartt and Sabrina Munroe, taking on Essequibo from 09:0hrs.
