Regal Softball Tournament
Heavenly Angels upset No 68 All Stars to win the Berbice zone in the female category of the Regal Stationery & Computer Centre Over-35 Male 20/20 & Female Open 10/10 Softball Cricket Tournament organised by the Guyana Softball League, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry last Sunday.
In the Female Open category, Young Stars XI defeated No 55 Survival XI by 51 runs. Young Stars XI batted first and rattled up a massive 123-2 in 10 overs, with Romona Albert hitting a blistering 73, which included 7 massive sixes. She was supported by Shenika Singh with 21 (2x6). Sharo Dallon bowled within herself to collect 2-13 from 2 overs to be the best bowler for No 55.
Survival XI, who in reply fell away badly, capitulated for 72 in 9.3 overs. Sharo Dallon made 20 but the rest of the batting was disappointing. Mc Bean took 3 for 13 from 2 overs and was supported by Melissa Albert with 2 for 18 from her 2 overs. They were the main destroyers for Young Stars XI.
In the final, Heavenly Angels cruised past Number 68 All Stars by 6 wickets to win the Berbice Zone and earn a place in the quarter-finals to be played soon.
No 68 All Stars won the toss and elected to bat, making a challenging 101-4 in their 10 overs. Shenella Mc Bean led the way with an enterprising 35 off 16 balls that included 3 sixes and 1 four. She was supported by Onica Tello with 32 ( 2x6 2x4). The experienced Erva Giddings took 3 for 6 from 2 overs bowling for Heavenly Angels.
In their reply Heavenly Angels lost 2 quick wickets but the cool head of Erva Giddings with 47 not out guided them to 103-4 to turn in a telling all-round performance and earn the team the right to represent Berbice in the quarter-finals. They will join Ituni Village Warriors, Mahaica Princesses, Marshon Female Team, Monar Institute and the winners of the Essequibo Zone in the quarter-finals to be played shortly.
Meanwhile, Regal XI continues to dominate the Georgetown/East Coast Zone in the Over-35 Male 20/20 category. In the match played at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground, Regal XI thrashed Mac Masters B by 71 runs in a low-scoring affair.
Regal XI won the toss and elected to take first strike scoring 129-7 in their 20 overs, with Lance Adams anchoring the innings with 39 not out. He was supported by Raymond Harper with a subdued 20. Ronald Persaud kept things tight for Mac Masters B with 2 for 24 from 5 overs. Mac Masters B in reply was bowled out for a paltry 58 in 18 overs. Mahase Chunilall, with 4 for15 from 5 overs and Mahendra Arjune 3 for 4 from 4 overs were the main destroyers for Regal X1.
In the other encounter Mac Masters A created an upset by defeating Success XI by 24 runs in another low-scoring affair. Mac Masters A batted first and rattled up 120 all out in 18 overs with Vinod Lall and Ricky Persaud, hitting 29 each, leading the way. Raymond Karim (2-14) and Jeff Ramnauth ( 2-34) were the main strike bowlers for Success XI. After a promising partnership of 45 between Basdeo Mullah (24) and Vijay Baljit (20), Success X1 folded for 96. Danny Mohanram captured 3 for 4 off 5 overs and was supported by Ryan Singh with 2 for 19 from his 5 overs, bowling for Mac Masters A.
