Rockaway’s captain, Kumar Bishundial, says their close win against Speedboat in the quarter-final of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company’s nationwide 10/10 softball cricket competition has boosted their confidence as they aim to lift the title for the first time.

Playing at the Everest Cricket Club ground last weekend, Rockaway successfully chased down a target of 86 in 9.5 overs, after they required 11 runs from the final over.

After Speedboat made just 85 runs, we did not take them for granted because they have the strongest bowling attack in the competition and we were the underdogs. We were nervous because we kept loosing wickets regularly but we never gave up. I kept telling the boys to take it one ball at a time,” the proud captain explained.

Bishundial went on to say that the intensity of the situation tested his batsmen’s ability to handle pressure and play sensibly. He pointed out that the game could have gone either way, but sensible batting by his team proved the difference in the end.

He stated that the victory was their best so far in the competition and it puts them in very high spirits going into the semis as they have worked very hard in training every afternoon.

The Rockaway team comprises players from Mon Repos, Good Hope, Lusignan and Annandale on the East Coast Demerara. Bishundial noted that his players are extremely grateful to the owner of Rockaway Auto Sales and Bicycle Store of Lusignan for his sponsorship of them for the third year. He also thanked their passionate fans, who have followed them throughout the competition each year without giving up.

We did not go far into the competition in the previous two years but this year we are confident of winning. We want all those who have faith in us to be proud of us,” Bishundial said. He said the team’s success is due to the all-round performances and togetherness. He said each member of the team has made a significant contribution along the way.

He himself has been remarkable on the field, scoring 62 runs against LBI Showstopper earlier in the competition, and taking a hat-trick as well. Another standout performance was when Devanand Samaroo hit six sixes in one over.

The boys are eagerly awaiting their semi-final match-up against Regal XI at the Everest Cricket Club ground on Sunday. The other semi-final will see Unstoppables from Berbice taking on defending champions, Wolf’s Warriors, of West Demerara.
