Sankar Spins GYO to Massive Win
Teenage leg-spinner Shiveshwar Sankar produced two destructive spells of bowling for Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) as Vikings were subjected to a crushing innings and 24 runs defeat in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Noble House Seafoods Second Division, 2-day cricket competition last weekend. Playing at the GYO ground, Woolford Avenue, Sankar bagged match figures of 12-84 from 24.4 overs of controlled bowling to hand his team full points from the encounter.
Final scores in the match: GYO 359-6 declared. Vikings 97 and 238.
On winning the toss, the GYO lads immediately opted to take first strike, and the decision proved a correct one as they piled up what turned out to a more than sufficient total. Vijay Gangaram led the way with a fine 90 (11x4s, 3x6s), while skipper Dereck Koulen scored a boundary studded 86, including 16 fours. Pravindralall Persaud and Shivanand Roopnarine chipped in with 40 and 42 respectively.
D. Dyal with 2-50 was the pick of the bowlers for Vikings, who failed miserably in their turn at the crease, being dismissed below the 100-run mark. Only Frederick Pestano with 20 got going, as Sankar snared 4-23 from 8.3 overs. Nandkishore Narine (3-11) and Garfield De Roche (2-15) were also among the wickets.
GYO’s captain Koulen then enforced the follow-on, and although Vikings fared better in their second innings, they could not save themselves from the ignominy of an innings defeat. Sankar ran through the innings, finishing with 8-61 from 16.1 probing overs, while medium-pacer De Roche assisted with 2-46. Pestano was again among the runs for Vikings with 71, while Devendra Beharry and Ryan Hemraj made 35 and 29 respectively.
