HAVING successfully partnered the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) by co-sponsoring their Twenty20 tournament, Ansa McAl, through their Stag Beer brand, and Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) through their El Dorado brand of rums, have joined forces once again. This time they are co-sponsoring the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association’s (GFSCA) nationwide floodlight softball competition that was launched yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground and will be played in three categories, namely Male Open, Female Open and Male Over-40 when the action gets under way next Sunday.

Chronicle Sport photographer Sonell Nelson was on hand to capture Ansa McAl/Stag Beer brand manager John Maikoo (fourth from left), GCC vice-president Ramsay Ali and club captain Phillip Fernandes as they share the moment with GFSCA officials at yesterday’s launching

According to the vice-president of GCC and marketing manager of the GCB, Ramsay Ali, this tournament is being held at the once world-renowned GCC ground, as the executives of that club seek to raise funds to achieve some of its infrastructural goals this year.

We at GCC are looking at ways in which we can garner funds to achieve the goals we have with regard to infrastructure at this club, with one of our main concerns being the installation of lights for the venue, which can facilitate the perfect hosting of night matches.” posited Ali.

Ansa McAl’s Stag Beer brand manager John Maikoo said his company was pleased to be associated with both the GFSCA and GCC on this venture, which can become an annual affair, to which Ali stated that once the tournament is held right, they will approach the sponsors next year.

The tournament will be played on a round-robin basis, with all the category winners receiving $50 000 and a trophy, while the runners-up will receive $25 000 and a trophy, while the player-of-the-tournament and player-of-the-final will collect $5 000 and a trophy each respectively.

In respect to the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T)-sponsored nationwide 10/10 tournament that was launched last night at the Guyana Convention Centre, the organisers will put a pause on their tournament to facilitate same, hence the date of the final for the GFSCA tournament is the 29th May.

Entrance fee for a team is $5 000, with the female players being asked to pay $2 000. All interested teams will be accepted, hence they are asked to make contact with the GFSCA’s organiser Wayne Jones on telephone number 650-1790 or 225-0994.

The Male Open will do battle for over 15 overs, the Women 10 overs and the Male Over-40 25 overs and at the end of the tournament, players will be picked to play for their various counties in the upcoming Mike’s Pharmacy Inter-county Softball tournament in June.

The four semifinalists in the Male Open category and the finalists from the Male Over-40 will take part in the 2011 Guyana Cup on October 28, 29 qnd 30 right here in Guyana, where teams from South Florida, Orlando, New York, Connecticut, Georgia, Ocala, Maryland and Toronto will battle for supremacy.

The eight female teams that make it to the quarterfinals will also play in a separate tournament alongside the males in the Guyana Cup.

With an aim of having a clean competition, free of any discrepancies, the organisers are inviting all umpires, team captains and representatives to a meeting at the GCC ground on Tuesday afternoon at 17:30 h.
