‘Tiger’ On The Loose In U. S.
At a time when the West Indies Cricket Board is constantly overlooking the services of veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul for limited overs cricket, the experienced left-hand er is proving that he still has the fire and appetite for the shorter forms, as was evident in the USA last weekend. The former West Indies captain racked up consecutive hundreds in back-to-back 40-over games for Sarasota International Cricket Club (SICC) against Tampa Tigers Cricket Club and Florida Badshahs respectively.
Playing at Sarasota on Saturday, the left-hander slammed a magnificent 203 not out to power SICC to a massive 331-8 from the allotted 40 overs. The ‘Tiger’, as he is affectionately known, stroked 30 fours and eight sixes in his innings and was supported by Lomesh Prashad, who contributed 60. Chanderpaul’s knock spanned just 89 deliveries. Nitin Patel (3-65) and Dennis Patel (3-67) were the pick of the bowlers for Tampa Tigers CC, who responded with 263-9. The Patels were among the runs with Dennis making 60 and Nitin 55.
Over at Ocala on Sunday, Chanderpaul was again in a destructive mood with a blistering 168 in SICC’s huge total of 330-2 from 40 overs. The 2008 ICC Cricketer-of-the-Year stroked the ball to all parts of the outfield and dominated a second wicket partnership with Chris Thakoorpersad. Chanderpaul’s entertaining knock included 20 fours and seven sixes, while Thakoorpersad assisted with 72. In reply, Florida Badshahs were dismissed for 255 with Iqbal Modi (65), Jeevan Kotha (65), and Rakesh Patel (45) being the principal scorers. Danny Bacchus (3-35) and Lesroy Edwards (3-20) were among the wickets for SICC.
