Wakenaam Cricket Committee
The Wakenaam Cricket Committee (WCC) is responsible for cricket on Wakenaam, an island of area 22 square miles at the mouth of the Essequibo River, with a population of about 10000. Wakenaam is accessible by both river and air. Two Test cricketers from Wakenaam are Ramnaresh Sarwan and Travis Dowlin. Wakenaam fields a first division team, consisting of players from the whole island, in Essequibo and national first division competitions.
Clubs (and their ground) in Wakenaam include Good Success Sports Club (Wakenaam Community Centre ground, Good Success), Maria's Pleasure Sports Club (Maria's Pleasure ground), Noitgedacht Sports Club (Noitgedacht ground), Sans Souci Sports Club, San Souci Jaguars Sports Club and Zeelandia Village Cricket Club (Zeelandia ground).
The WCC is an administrative and geographical division of the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB).
The WCC won a senior Essequibo Cricket Board competition for the first time ever, by winning the ECB 40-overs competition in 2012.
This year the WCC successfully ran two 20-overs competitions, sponsored by Safraz Sherifudeen (Mac) and Feroze Amin. Sans Souci Jaguars won the competition sponsored by Safraz Sherifudeen and Sans Souci SC won the one sponsored by Feroze Amin. Other competitions planned for 2012 were postponed because of poor weather.
Several players from Wakenaam were selected to the Essequibo inter-county teams and some went on to represent Guyana. Kemo Paul captained the Guyana Under-15 team and Ricardo Adams recorded the first century by an Essequibian in regional Under-19 competition. Wayne Osborne and Adams were selected to represent Essequibo in the inter-county Twenty20 competition, which was unfortunately rained out.
The Committee is expressing many thanks to its sponsors, Safraz Sherifudeen and Feroze Amin. Secretary of the WCC Nazeer Mohamed was thankful to sponsors Safraz Sherifudeen and Feroze Amin on behalf of the WCC.
