Leslie Fernandes, the son of Maurice Pacheco Fernandes, played a single first class match for Guyana (British Guiana then), against EW Swanton's XI, at Bourda in 1961. He toured England in August 1968 with the USA team while a student at the University of Pennsylvania, playing against the minor counties. He also played for the USA against Canada in September 1968.
Graduating from St Stanislaus College in Georgetown in 1955, Leslie worked in the family business until 1962, when he went to work in Pennsylvania, USA. He started at the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, graduating in 1971 with a BA in Economics. He worked in computers in Trinidad until 1974, after which he returned to Guyana to work at IBM.
Leslie Fernandes died tragically in a road accident in 1978, leaving behind his wife and two sons. Hiss cheerful disposition, friendly approach and sympathetic concern made him welcome in many circles. His sporting activities included golf, cricket, tennis and squash, and in 1975, he was elected Tennis Captain at the Georgetown Cricket Club.
