William Whyte was a middle-order batsman and medium pacer who made his debut for the Guyana Youth team in the 1971 regional youth competition in Jamaica. He also represented the Guyana youth team in the 1972 regional youth competition, in Barbados.
He made his first class debut, for Demerara, in the 1976 Jones Cup final, and his List A debut for the senior Guyana team in May 1980. In March 1982 he took 5 for 36 in a List A against Trinidad & Tobago at the Queen's Park Oval, and in March 1982 made his first class debut for Guyana, against Barbados at Bourda. Considered mainly a List A player, he played his second first class-match for Guyana in January 1984, scoring 105 against Jamaica at Sabina Park.
Despite his early promise he never quite emerged as a major player on the Guyana team, scoring another first-class fifty before his career for Guyana ended in 1985.
