(Report based on Guyana Times and Kaieteur News articles.)

Demerara fast bowler Paul Wintz took six wickets as Demerara defeated Essequibo by five wickets on the opening day of the Guyana Cricket Board’s Inter-County 50-over tournament at the Everest Cricket Club ground on Camp Road. The ebullient Wintz finished with 6 for 26 from 9.1 overs as Essequibo was dismissed for a meager 92 in 31.1 overs. In reply, Demerara survived an early scare to achieve victory at 94-5 from 36.4 overs.

Essequibo won the toss and elected to bat in brilliant sunshine on a good pitch but uneven outfield. They quickly lost opener Norman Federicks, bowled by Wintz for 2 with the score on 6, in the first over. Wintz then uprooted the stumps of Vijay Surujpaul for 5, to leave the score at 13-2. He bowled with impressive stamina, sustained pace and bounce in his five-over opening spell.

Essequibo skipper Royan Fredericks, who opened the batting, and Dellon Heyliger carried the total to 60 with a third wicket stand of 47 before leg spinner Amir Khan had Heyliger caught for 12, which came off 44 balls. Royan soon followed for 33 (1×4, 1×6) when he was caught off Khan at 60. Off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed then got into the act by removing Ricardo Adams for 14 (1×4, 1×6) before Wayne Osborne was leg before to Khan without scoring.

Wintz, who ended with 6-26 off 5 overs, mopped up the rest of the batting as Essequibo fell for 92 in 31.1 overs as no other batsman managed to reach double figures. Khan finished with 3-18 off 7 overs and off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed 1-15 off 7 overs.

The home team in reply lost an early wicket when Rajendra Chandreka was trapped in front by Heyliger for 0 with the score on 2. Left-arm spinner Anthony Adams removed Chanderpaul Hemraj for 6 and Shemroy Barrington for 10, as the home team slipped to 19-3. Vishal Singh and Travis Dowlin took the score to 31 before Dowlin was caught off Ricardo Adams at short extra cover for 7 as the visitors were reduced to 31-4.

Singh and Joseph Perry added 37 for the fourth wicket stand, but Anthony Adams struck again with the score at 68 when he had Perry leg before for 11. Singh, who ended unbeaten on 26, and Mohamed 11 not out, saw Demerara to safety with a 6th wicket partnership of 26. Anthony Adams was the best bowler with 3-16, while Heyliger and Ricardo Adams took one wicket each.
