Play on the first day of Round Two of the Guyana Cricket Board Senior 4-day Inter-county competition was cut short by rain. Earlier Chandreka and Robin Bacchus put together 42 for the opening stand before the rain intervened at 11:04hrs after 7 overs, with Chandreka on 21 and Bacchus on 20. When play restarted at 15:15hrs pacer Seon Daniels trapped Bacchus leg before for 33 (5×4, 1×6) at 55. Pacer Seon Daniels grabbed 2 late wickets as Demerara ended Day 2 on 157-5 after rain reduced play to 30.3 overs at DCC.
Heavy overnight rain caused the game to start just after tea with Demerara on 107-1, with Rajendra Chandrika on 52 and Shemroy Barrington on 13. The pair took the score to 131 before Barrington, apparently well set, was caught off fast bowler Brandon Bess for 32 (4x4, 83 balls). Steven Latcha then removed Chanderpaul Hemraj without scoring one run later.
Vishal Singh joined Chandrika who continued to play his shots, and took the score to 150 before Daniels trapped Chandrika lbw for 73 (12x4, 79 balls). Daniels then induced Joseph Perry (0) to nick one behind as Demerara slipped to 152. Singh on 9 not out and Zaheer Mohamed on 0, saw their team to the close safely. Daniels ended the day with 3-34, while Bess (1-24) and Latcha (1-50) were the other wicket takers for the President’s XI.
(Day 3 Report based on a Kaieteur News article.)
Half centuries by Vishal Singh and Shaquille Williams and two late wickets by Amir Khan gave Demerara the upper hand against the President’s XI when play on Day 3 concluded.
Demerara resumed on their overnight first innings total of 157-5 with Singh on 9 and Zaheer Mohamed on 0. Pacer Brandon Bess had Mohamed caught behind for 7 and Paul Wintz without scoring, to leave the score at 181-7. The pair continued to frustrate the opposition with sensible batting on a flat DCC pitch after the interval with Williams pulling medium pacer Elton Baker to fine leg for four to bring up his fifty, and celebrated by steering the next delivery to the third man boundary.
He then drove Baker through cover and mid wicket for consecutive fours in his next over before he was dropped at first slip off the next delivery, which went for another boundary. His fifty came off 93 balls. Pacer Seon Daniels got the break-through when he trapped Williams lbw for 78 (14×4) at 312. Singh and Kellon Carmichael took their team to tea at 352 with Singh on 79 and Carmichael on 18.
Baker then wrapped up the innings after the break by trapping Carmichael lbw for 23 (4×4) and then had Singh caught at mid off for 82 (7x4, 278 balls) as Demerara made 365 in 132.3 overs. Daniels took 4-82, while Bess had 3-48 and Baker 2-16.
The President’s XI got off to a good start with Krishna Arjune and the in-form Tagenarine Chanderpaul putting together 53 for the first wicket before Amir Khan struck. The pair continued to bat beautifully after the break with Sookdeo reaching his fifty off 188 balls. La Fleur was then caught and bowled by Khan for 42 who then accounted for Collis Butts for 1 to leave the score at 165-7.
Kellon Carmichael soon trapped Brandon Bess lbw for 1 before Zaheer Mohamed removed Seon Daniels for 2 at 196 but Gilford Moore (2) and Sookdeo carried their team past the follow on target of 199 before Moore was bowled by Mohamed as the President’s XI fell for 202 in 95.5 overs.
