Match Report (Kaieteur News)
Berbice moved a step closer to retaining their Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) El Dorado 50-over Cricket title when they slaughtered a hapless Essequibo line-up by nine wickets at DCC yesterday in the final preliminary round of the competition to advance to Sunday’s final at Albion.
Essequibo fell like the ashes of cane from the sky as Berbice sped to 179-1 in 21 overs after dismissing the Essequibians for 178 in 48 overs to ensure the team from the Cinderella County finished the four-team competition in a now familiar cellar position for them without a point.
Essequibo were asked to take first strike and although Yogeshwar Lall showed sparks of brilliance in Essequibo’s dark cave of mediocrity with a solid 49 before he was LBW to Shawn Pereira, no other batsman reached 25. Jason Heyliger (23), Norwayne Fredericks (24), Norman Fredericks (17) and pacer Kevin Gordon (15) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures as left-arm spinner Eugene La Fleur snatched three wickets for the defending champions.
Berbice lost Richard Ramdeen for a cameo 27 when he was bowled by off-spinner Heyliger after an explosive opening start with Skipper Assad Fudadin (74*), but Narsingh Deonarine (66*) and his Captain saw their team to victory with 29 overs to spare.
Berbice who beat Demerara at the Guyana National stadium in last year’s Final, now face them in Sunday’s final from 09:00hrs at Albion.
