Match report (Guyana Times)

Essequibo suffered their second consecutive defeat in this year’s GCB/ El Dorado Inter-County 50-over tournament after they were crushed by the President’s X1 by nine wickets at the DCC ground yesterday. Off-spinner Steven Jacobs claimed 4-20, Sewnarine Chattergoon 3-9, and Dion Ferrier 2-8 as Essequibo were dismissed for 120 in 34.5 overs.

In the President’s X1’ s turn at the wicket, Sewnarine Chattergoon hit a flamboyant 53 not out and Chanderpaul Hemraj an elegant 56 not out, the two sharing an unbroken second wicket stand of 114 as the President’s X1 reached 124 for 1 with 24.3 overs to spare.

Essequibo fielded an unchanged eleven from their first game, with openers Norman Fredericks and Kevin Boodie giving their team a brisk start after they were inserted to bat. Boodie in particular took a no-nonsense approach from the start, hitting Joshua Wade for two massive sixes in the innings’ second over and a four in Wade’s second over. He then launched another ferocious six off Steven Jacobs’s first delivery after the off-spinner was introduced in the fifth over.

Fredericks made nine in the 40-run opening stand before he became Jacobs’s first of four victims. Jacobs then claimed the wickets of Yougeshwar Lall (0), Kevon Boodie (30) and Jason Heyliger (3) as the Essequibians were never allowed to capitalise on their good foundation, slipping to 53 for 4 in 9.2 overs. Royan Fredericks and Herrel Green tried to rebuild in compiling 34 before Fredericks was brilliantly run out at backward point by Steven Jacobs for 16 at 87-5.

That dismissal started a procession, as the last five wickets tumbled for 33 runs in 10.2 overs. Rovindra Parsram (7) was trapped leg before to Sewnarine Chattergoon, who quickly accounted for Ricardo Adams (9) and Herrel Green (37). Dion Ferrier wrapped up the innings with the wickets of Ronsford Beaton (1) and Kevin Gordon (0) an hour and 15 minutes before the regular lunch interval.

President’s X1 then made an unsteady start to their run chase, as Artley Bailey (10) got a thin edge to wicket keeper Herrel Green off Beaton in the third over at 10-1. However, former West Indies opening batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon then combined with Chanderpaul Hemraj and the pair built an unbroken 77 partnership when lunch was taken. Chattergoon was unbeaten on 39 (4x4, 2x6) and Hemraj 34 (5x4, 1x6).

After the interval both batsmen continued their aggression with Hemraj pulling Anthony Adams for his second six of the innings to register his half-century. Chattergoon also brought up his half-ton with a four off Anthony Adams. Hemraj sealed victory with a classic cover drive for four off Jason Heyliger. Chattergoon’s innings lasted for 71 deliveries and included five fours and two sixes, while Hemraj’s innings came off 65 deliveries with seven fours and two sixes. Ronsford Beaton was the lone wicket-taker for Essequibo with 1-37 off 5 overs.

The President’s X1 will now play Demerara at Everest tomorrow in round three of the tournament, while Essequibo will face defending champions Berbice at DCC.
