My friend came to visit the other day to proudly announce that his Second Form son had started sports at his school. He was unhappy however about the overweight shot putt sphere his son was asked to use. It was just too large for his grasp.

GUYANA'S cricket selectors have done a fairly good job in naming 31 players to take part in the trials for the Shell Shield regional tournament.

Two Schoolboys Called To Trials

GUYANA’S cricket selectors yesterday announced the names of 31 players invited to take part in trial matches in preparation for the Shell Shield regional tournament, starting next month.

Nigel Greaves

Nigel Greaves made his debut for the Guyana Under-19 team in the 1986 Northern Telecom regional youth competition, in Trinidad. He played for the Guyana Under-19 team again in the 1987 Northern Telecom regional youth competition, in Jamaica.

He was described as a solid middle order batsman who possessed tremendous concentration and powerful stroke play. He scored a century against Essequibo in the 1987 GTM semi-final and was prolific in local club cricket.

Indo-Guyanese Cricket Pioneer

John Veerasawmy was a left-arm medium pacer who was the first East Indian to represent Guyana in first class cricket. He was born on 12 May 1891, in Georgetown, Guyana and died on 12 Apr 1947, in Guyana.

BHS, QC to Play Mash Match

After an absence of 20 years, National Sports Commission in collaboration with the Allied Arts Department of the Ministry of Education, will be hosting a 40-overs a side cricket match involving Berbice High School (BHS) and Queen’s College (QC) today at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence from 10:00hrs.

QC Beat Berbice High by 5 Wkts

A man-of-the-match performance from Feaz Mustapha (2-28 and 51) steered Queen’s College (QC) to a five-wicket victory over Berbice High School (BHS) in the National Sports Commission (NSC)/Allied Arts Department 40-overs-a-side cricket match at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence yesterday.
