During the past week, seven youth teams from Georgetown had the opportunity for the first time to play under floodlights at the DCC Ground in Queenstown. Everest, GCC, DCC, Maltenoes, Transport, Gandhi, and GNIC comprising basically of Under-15 players, with three Under-17 players allowed, are competing for the Coach Garvin Nedd Birthday Trophy.
This is a Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) and Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) collaborative effort to develop young cricketers who are aspiring to make the Demerara, Guyana and West Indies team. Ten games have already been played.
The final preliminary rounds is on Saturday evening at 6:00 pm. The two semi-finals will be played on Sunday starting 9:30 am and 1:00 pm. The final between the two semi-final winners then plays at 6:30 pm. Admission is free and cricket fans are urged to come and support and witness some future international stars.
Presently Everest is undefeated and on top of group A with 9 points from 3 wins and Gandhi, also undefeated, is on top of group B with 6 points from 2 wins.
A similar competition for Under-13s will start next Sunday October 4th at 6 pm at DCC ground. To qualify to play, players must be born in 2003 or after. Teams from anywhere in Guyana will be accepted. For any further information, Garvin Nedd can be contacted at 617-9381.
