Hi Norm - best of luck with your excellent website. I know it's a big topic but can you tell me: Is there still a keen interest in cricket in Guyana?
I'm Irish and I've been a West Indies fanatic for about 20 years since Sky Sports started ahowing the games on TV. Sadly that has coincided with the decline of WI as a real power all the way to the recent revolt on the tour of India. I'd love to see the team become competitive again.
Thanks for visiting guyana-cricket.com.
Yes, cricket is still followed enthusiastically in Guyana, and the rest of the West Indies. Interest in the game among the general population in Guyana seems to be sustained mostly by Twenty20 cricket. Indeed, the largest crowds in the West Indies at regional and international matches seem to occur in Guyana.
The West Indies still has raw talent and love for the game, but poor administration seems to be the biggest problem. Could the West Indies return to something like its glory days? Possibly, but not likely. Uncovering new talent could make it a top team once more, but it would never dominate the game again - certainly not for as long as it did in the 70's, 80's and 90's.
I am happy to see an Irishman that is such a big fan of both cricket in general, and the West Indies. Of course, I would love to see the West Indies rise again too!
All the best, and feel free to drop us a line anytime,
Norm (Admin - http://www.guyana-cricket.com)
